but there is more to mr. wang than just another candidate who possesses the necessary intelligence and scores. there is his unique enthusiasm for his area of study and its real life impact on the community in which he lives. one senses there is a larger call to duty when he states it is his goal to become a successful legal practitioner. i have noticed a strong affinity for placing a practical application on his academic and research focuses. while too many lawyers have entered their respective field too idealistic to placate the gulf between class and the courtroom, mr. wang has illustrated the competence and maturity to reason the difference between the abstract and the reality of this tough profession.
more specifically, i am referring to his work on the judicial reform foundation, where he began his practical legal training and volunteer work while still an undergraduate. i trust his abilities to help someday reform taiwans legal codes to match the progressiveness of its present political, social and cultural development. while many of his peers are complacent with and poised to become corporate lawyers, his place will be in the community with the people who do not possess the affluence and education to know fully their rights and duties as citizens.

She apparently made the right decision, for she has since become one of our most successful graduates in her crop of students.
Ms. Shan is good at communicating in both oral and written English. Some of he most important undergraduate courses were taught by American professors, many of whom considered her oral English as native and her written English as standard. I am sure that she has since improved her English a lot more in her professional life.
In Ms. Shan, we all saw an optimistic and easy-going character. With highly unusual determination, she is not to be daunted by any difficulties. The seed of the dream emerged from my journey to Hong Kong at the age of 8.Hong Kong, with its unique historical background, is home to residents from all over the world. 剑桥商务英语证书(Cambridge Business English Certificate,简称BEC)考试,是英国剑桥大学考试委员会(University of Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate,简称UCLES)专门为我国设计的英语水平考试。它是根据英语为非母语国家的人员进行国际商务活动的需要而设计的。
为适应中国改革开放的需要,国家教委考试中心与剑桥大学考试委员会商定从1993年起在中国合作举办剑桥英语考试。作为双方合作的第一个考试项目,双方协议首先举办剑桥商务英语证书(BEC)考试。该项考试在欧美许多国家被广泛承认,是就业领域中最权威的英语能力证明。
它的最高级别考试在欧美又称为国际商贸英语证书考试:CEIBT(Certificate in English for International Business and Trade)。
剑桥商务英语证书(BEC)考试根据商务工作人员业务水平的需要,对考生在经济贸易和商务活动的一般工作环境中使用英语的能力从听、说、读、写四个方面进行全面考察,并提供标准统一的权威证书。因此,该证书可被各类涉外企业、部门、组织或机构用来招收职员时作为英语能力的证明,也可被商务工作人员或英语学习者作为提高英语水平的验证等,对即将进入就业领域的在校学生或已工作的青年来说,它将是就业、求职的重要砝码。实际上,BEC由于其考试单位--英国剑桥大学考试委员会考试的科学性、权威性,已被国内大多数外企、商社和涉外单位认可,是招聘雇员优先录用的主要条件之一。
根据中国的实际情况,剑桥大学聘请了许多EFL(English as Foreign Language)专家,在剑桥商务英语证书(BEC)考试系列中专门设计了较低和中上级别的两个考试:即商务英语证书考试(第一级)(Business English Certificate 1,简称BEC1)和商务英语证书考试(第二级)(BEC2)。在BEC考试系列中中,原有的CEIBT将作为BEC考试第三级,以便该考试与国际通用标准接轨,通过BEC考试第三级的考生将得到CEIBT证书。考核成绩合格者获得由剑桥大学考试委员会签发,教育部考试中心认可的证书。
BEC一级证书是为需要在办公室工作中使用商务英语的雇员而设计的。在招聘人员时使用BEC一级证书作为基本商务英语语言要求,可以使公司准确评估应聘人员的真实商务英语运用水平;BEC二级证书适用于中级管理层的雇员,作为鉴定具有中级商务英语水平雇员的工具;BEC三级证书证明了证书持有者在广泛的专业领域使用商务英语的能力。
BEC之所以具备权威性还因为,它得到了众多权威机构的认可。已于2000年开考的、由英国剑桥大学考试委员会与中国全国高等教育自学考试指导委员会联合推出并颁发证书的"商务管理"、"金融管理"两个专业指定BEC为其英语课程。获得BEC1、2、3级C以上成绩证书者免考该课程。
BEC3级已被英国许多大学和中国一些大学定为MBA必修课之一。并被英国50多所大学认可作为入学英语语言能力证明。
全国已有26个省、直辖市、自治区的34个城市设有58个考点。每年三月、九月报名截止;五、六月,十一、十二月考试。从2002年起,BEC商务英语证书考试将有很大变化。
具体变化是:首先,各个级别的考试名称将由现在的BEC1、BEC2、BEC3更名为BEC初级、BEC中级、BEC高级;口试成绩不再单独,占总分的25%;BEC初级(即现在的BEC1)不再分A、B、C、D四个等第,改为Pathmerit(优秀)和Pass(通过)两等;根据考试级别的不同,阅读和写作部分的时间将增加15分钟至30分钟不等。
据悉,变化之后的BEC考试将较现在的难度有所增加。考试中心有关人士指出,之所以出现这些变化是因为BEC考试1993年最早出现时只面向中国,当时只在中国开考,所以那时考虑到中国考生的口语较差,都没有进行口语考试。但现在BEC已成为一个全球化的考试,全球有60多个国家都在举办这项考试。因此它的标准要符合全球统一标准并与剑桥考试委员会其他考试标准相衔接。

接听电话时,需知道对方是谁,并询问对方单位名称及所属部门,详细弄清一切,给被指名来接听电话的人以便利;
商务或公务电话都不宜太长;
电话交谈时声音不要太大。一是不必要,二是会遭人白眼;
接到陌生人的电话,在不了解对方的动机、目的是什么时,接话人不可直来直去地告诉对方,同时也应为别人保密;当对方要找的人不在时,请不要随便传话,或说出不在者行踪;

英国书信较为保守,许多英国人喜欢用老式书信体,用词较为正式刻板。
而美国书信语言非常生气、有活力,格式也较为简便。
因此当我们写信的对象是英国或其旧殖民地国家时,要使用标准式英语Queen's English;如果写信的对象是美国或美国势力范围的地区时,就要用美国英语。当然,英国式的语言文化近年来也有变化,但总体来说,两者间的差异是很明显的。
商业英文书信,一般都要求用打字机或电脑整齐地打印,左边各行开头垂直的,称为垂直式或齐头式(Block style),美国常用这种格式;每段的第一个词缩进? 垂直式的职务及签名都在左边的边栏界线,这种格式,在极度尊重工作效率的美国公司,已普遍采用。
正式的商业英语书信要在称呼的上方写上收信公司名称和地址或收信人的名字全称、职务及地址,称为信内地址(Inside address)。信内地址的写法也有垂直式和缩进式之分,垂直式和称美国式将各行并列,缩进式或称英国式将各行依次退缩。
不过,近来英国商业书信信内地址并未依次缩进,似乎与美国式相同。此外,在美国还流行一种普通收信人地址的写法,就是在书信的Inside Address中,把门牌号和街名都省略掉。在英文书信中要使用敬语,最普遍的敬语是Mr, Mrs和Miss(用于未婚女性)。英国人常在男性的姓名之后用Esq. (Esquire的缩写),不过在商业上也在慢慢地改用Mr. Mmes. (Madam的复数形式),用于二个女士以上。Messrs(Mr的复数形式)用于二个以上的男人,或用于二个以上的男人组成的公司或团体。在英国式英文信里,Mr,Mrs,Messrs,均不加缩写句点,相反地趋向于进步自由的美语反而加缩写句点如Mr.,Mrs.,Messrs.。在称呼方面,商业上最普遍的有Gentlemen(美国式)与Dear Sirs(英国式)二种,相当于我国的“敬启者”或“谨启者”。如果信是写给革个公司单位的,不是写给某个具体人的,美语用Gentlemen(复数形式),英语用Dear Sirs。如果对方公司只一人时,必须使用Sir/Dear Sir。称呼后一般要使用标点符号,英国式采用逗号(comma),美国式用分号(colon)。书信结尾客套语(complimentary close)有多种,相当于我国书信在结尾时使用的“敬礼”、“致敬”、“顺安”等句。最为典型的美国式写法是Sincerely和Best regards,典型的英国式表达有Yours sincerely(熟人或知道对方姓名),Best wishes, kind regards 和yours faithfully(不知姓名)。此外,英国式的客套语还有特别礼貌的格式,但除了特殊情况外,现在不再使用。

以前每次为了买东西而打电话给人家, 我都直接说, “I want to buy this,I want to buy that.” 当然啦!!要买东西的人最大, 不管你说什么别人都一定会想办法把东西卖给你的。 只是你如果直接说 buy 听来比较像是日常生活在说的对话。 如果像是公司要采购商品时, 最好正式一点用order, 或是更完整一些说 place an order for, 例如 “I want to order a color printer。” 或是, “I want to place an order for a color printer。” 都是不错的用法。

通常你会打电话给别的公司不外乎以下几种状况: 询价, 下订单, 追踪订单, 应征工作, 推销产品等等。 首先谈到询价。 如果只是要请对方大略地估个价钱, 你可以说, “Can you give me a quote?” 或 “Can you give me an estimate?” 但是提醒大家, 这个 quote 发 /kwot/ 的音, 记得要特别强调那个 /wo/ 的音, 不然老美会以为你在说 coat /kot/ 或是 court /kort/ 这个字。 这种情况就发生在我身上不只一次, 有一次拿车去修车厂估价, 我跟技工说, “Can you give me a quote?” 他却回答我, “You need a coat?” 扯了半天他才搞懂, 后来我才知道原来自己 quote 的音发错了。 所以最好的办法就是用 estimate, 这个字是绝对不会发错的。
另外, estimate 和 quote 也可以指「报价单」而言, 例如你可以要求别人, “Can you send me a sample with an estimate ASAP?” (能不能请你尽快送一份样品和报价单给我?)
我打电话来查看我订单的状况。
以前我因为不知道 check order status 这个用法, 常拉拉杂杂讲了一堆才能表达我的意思。 例如我可能会说, “I ordered something yesterday. Can you check if you’ve shipped it or not” ,这句话听起来是不是蛮笨的? 后来我暗中观察, 同样的情况原来老美居然都简简单单地说 “I want to check my order status” 或是 “I want to track my order status” 就能完整地表达这句话的意思, 真是太神奇了。
这让我想到有一次在机场也是, 我想问柜台小姐我的朋友倒底坐哪一班飞机, 那班飞机有没有慢分, 他大概几点会到, 当我好不容易讲完这么长一串时, 柜台小姐居然只回了我一句, “You wanna check passenger status?” 差点没昏到, 原来我只要用 check passenger status 就行了喔?

打电话到别人公司如果是有求于人的话,例如要去应征啦或是推销东西啦,最好能先攀点关系啦! 例如最常用的招数, 我是某某人介绍来的, 就是 “I was referred to you by someone。” (注意, 介绍在这里用 refer 而不是用 introduce) 还有呢? 如果你今天拿到了该公司的折价卷, 则最好也是开宗明义地说, “I got your number from a coupon, which says your product is 50% off today” (我是根据你们折价卷上的号码打过来的, 它上面写着今天产品五折优待。) 这样子让他想赖都赖不掉。 总之呢? 先表明自已是怎么搭上这条线的, 这样子别人才不会有突兀的感觉啦。
PUTIFHD 公司, 我能帮你什么吗?
这句话算是制式的讲法。 一般接起电话的人通常会先报公司的名字 “PUTIFHD corporation”, 然后再说, “May I help you?” 或是如果要更客气一点的话则可以说 “How can I help you?” (我该怎么帮你?), 因为这样的问法表示我「该」怎么帮你, 而非我「需不需要」帮你? 但基本上 “May I help you?” 跟 “How can I help you?” 都很常见就是了。
不过如果是机器接的电话, 则听到的多半是这样, “Thanks for calling PUTIFHD corporation, if you know your party’s last name or extention, press 1. If you want to recieve information or publication, press 2. If you want to talk to the operator, press pound sign or remain on the line.” (感谢你打电话到 ABC 来, 如果你知道你要找的人的姓或是分机号码, 请按 1, 如果是想要本公司的简介或出版品, 请按 2, 如果是要找总机, 请按 #, 或是请别挂断。

如果人家打电话来是要找你的上司, “May I talk to your manager?” (我能不能跟你们经理讲话?) 这时你总不能糊里胡涂地就把电话拿给经理说, 说不定人家是打电话来跟你经理勒索一百万的呢! 所以通常我们一定要先确定打电话来的是谁。 最客气的问法是, “Whom I am speaking with?” 或是 “Whom am I talking to?” (我正在跟谁讲话呢?) 但是人家一听是像我这种小毛头打电话找他们经理, 他们就会用比较口语的说法, “And you are?” (你是?) 如果人家这样问我, 我就可以答, “This is Benlin。”
像是 “And you are?” 这么口语的英文书上大概学不到, 但这却是老美天天在用的句子, 只怕你学了之后还不敢用。 其实真的不用怕。 越简单的句子老美越听得懂。 而且事实上 “And you are?” 这句话还有许多适用的场合, 例如在公司的接待处 (reception)。 来访的客人如果说, “I’m looking for Mr。 Wolf。” (我要找伍夫先生) 接待小姐就可以反问他, “And you are?” (你是?) 所以像这种简单又好用的句子大家一定要记起来喔!
我会请她听电话, 请等一下。
Put someone on the phone 这个词组就是说请某人听电话。 例如你打电话找妳女朋友, 结果女朋友的同事接了电话, 就开始跟你东扯西扯, 问你们昨天是不是吵架了啊? 什么时候要结婚啦, 这时如果你实在不想跟她讲了, 就可以说, “Could you please just put her on the phone?” (你能不能请她来听电话啊?) 反过来如果今天是你接到了电话, 结果要找的是别人, 你就可以说, “Ok. I’ll put her on the phone. Just a second. ” (好, 我会请她听电话, 请稍等一下。)
上面讲的 put someone on the phone, 指的多半是只有一只电话时, 但如果像公司里有许多分机, 则用「转接」 transfer 或是 redirect。 会比较恰当。 例如同样的情况你可以说, “I’m transferring your call” 或是 “I’m redirecting your call” (我帮你转接到分机给她。) 如果是接线生转接的话, 他们有时就只简单地说, “One moment, please” 或是, “OK. I’ll put you through”
你介不介意稍微等一分钟啊?
在美国如果有机会打电话给客户服务 (Customer Service)部门, 如果没意外的话都会听到以下的电话录音, “All of our representitives are currently busy serving their customers. 如果别人要找的人不在, 通常我们有二种选择, 第一种是请别人晚点再打来, 除了像例句用 try again/ call again 之外, 我们也可以用 call back/ try back 这样的讲法。 例如你可以建议别人, “Why don’t you call back in 30 minutes?” (你何不 30 分钟后再打来呢?) 第二种选择就是请对方留言, 客气一点的讲法是, “May I take your message?” 或是 “Would you like to leave a message?” (你想留言吗?)
她不在这里, 但是妳可以打她的电话录音机。
老美管电话录音机叫 answering machine 或是也有少数人叫 answer machine。 但是在一般的对话中常常简称 machine。 例如 “You can call her machine。” 就是说, 你可以打她的电话录音机留言。 或是你打电话给某人, 但你想他很可能不在, 这时你就可以说, “I’m expecting a machine。” (我想会是电话录音机接的电话。) 如果是 “I want to check on my machine。” 则是说我要检查电话录音机里的留言。
记得喔! 通常人家讲 someone’s machine 时百分之九十九都是指电话录音机而言, 你可别傻傻地问人, “Answering machine?” 像六人行 (Friends) 里有一集 Chandler 说, “I got her machine” 结果 Joey 还呆呆地问他, “Her answering machine?” Chandler 就讽刺 Joey 的无知说, “No, interestingly enough, her leaf blower (machine) picked up the phone. ” (很有趣喔, 不是电话录音机喔! 而是她的吹落叶机接的电话。) 注: 美国的萿叶都不是用扫的, 而是用吹的, 很神奇吧? 而 leaf blower 就是那种背在身上拿来吹落叶的机器啦!

Wang: Right. I think we've got a lot to do. First, we should make all the staff members realize how important effective time management is to our company.

The importance of having a good CV
Well, in my opinion, you can never underestimate the importance of having a good CV.
In the majority of cases, your CV is the employer's first impression of you, your first chance to impress your potential employer, let's say. It is the essential illustration of your suitability for the job, showing how your skills and experience match your employer's requirements.
But more than that, it shows your ability to summarize, prioritize and present information effectively, essential skills in today's job market. It also shows your linguistic and communicative abilities.
Even though employers these days use a variety of selection techniques, such as analyzing your handwriting, a good TV is still the single most important part of any application.

Smith: Could you arrange a meeting with your boss?

Smith: Well, shall we get down to business?
Kim: Sure, did you receive the sample we sent last week?
Smith: Yes, we finished the evaluation of it. If the price is acceptable we would like to order now.
Kim: I’m very glad to hear that.
Smith: What’s your best price for that item?
Kim: The unit price is $12.50.
Smith: I think the price is a little high, can’t you reduce it?

一、NO TRICKS中的“N”代表需求(need)
对于买卖双方来说,谁的需求更强烈一些?如果买方的需要较多,卖方就拥有相对较强的谈判力,你越希望卖出你的产品,买方就拥有较强的谈判力。
二、NO TRICKS中的“O”代表选择(options)
如果谈判不能最后达成协议,那么双方会有什么选择?如果你可选择的机会越多,对?
三、T代表时间(time)
主要是指谈判中可能出现的有时间限制的紧急事件,如果买方受时间的压力,自然会增强卖方的的谈判力。
四、NO TRICKS中的“R”代表关系(relationship)
如果与顾客之间建立强有力的关系,在同潜在顾客谈判时就会拥有关系力。但是,也许有的顾客觉得卖方只是为了推销,因而不愿建立深入的关系,这样。在谈判过程中将会比较吃力。
五、I代表投资(investment)
在谈判过程中投入了多少时间和精力?为此投入越多、对达成协议承诺越多的一方往往拥有较少的谈判力。
六、C代表可信性(credibility)
如果潜在顾客对产品可信性也是谈判力的一种,如果推销人员知道你曾经使用过某种产品,而他的产品具有价格和质量等方面的优势时,无疑会增强卖方的可信性,但这一点并不能决定最后是否能成交。
七、K代表知识(knowledge)
知识就是力量。如果你充分了解顾客的问题和需求,并预测到你的产品能如何满足顾客的需求,你的知识无疑增强了对顾客的谈判力。反之,如果顾客对产品拥有更多的知识和经验,顾客就有较强的谈判力。
八、S代表的是技能(skill)
这可能是增强谈判力最重要的内容了,不过,谈判技巧是综合的学问,需要广博的知识、雄辩的口才、灵敏的思维……
